The recent games on the weekend represent the first two days of the group stage for the League of Legends World Championships. As expected, they did not disappoint, with the competition between the various teams being extremely intense throughout.

Recap

As expected, easy predictions such as Royal Never Give Up’s over Clutch Gaming, Fnatic’s over Clutch Gaming and Damwon Gaming over Ahq e-Sports Club all held true.
However, this weekend’s games also had some interesting upsets, especially with CTBC J Team’s win against FunPlus Phoenix, likely the most unexpected outcome that will emerge from Worlds.

J Team had only very recently risen to the top, prior to their LMS 2019 Summer dominance, placing amongst 3rd – 4th in the region. On the other hand, FunPlus Phoenix had an amazing 2019, also dominating the LPL and placing 2nd in the 2019 Rift Rivals (LCK, LPL, LMS & VCS).

This year’s Worlds is key for Korea to turn their region’s performance around, considering the games throughout the first two days, it does not look too good. While SKT may have taken out RNG, the game had been extremely close, with numerous macro mistakes being made, not to mention the loss of Damwon and Griffin against NA and EU.

2019 is the first year in many Western teams have opted not travel to Korea for scrims, if SKT fails to perform as well, Korea may well and truly lose their position as the game’s dominating competitive region.
